Buy the fixture after somebody has looked
Fixtures are not interchangeable. A shower valve sits at a set depth behind the finished wall and tile thickness changes that, toilets come in different rough-in distances, and a freestanding tub needs the drain where a standard tub does not. Tell us which fixture you are considering before you buy it, and we will tell you what the house needs to accept it. Asking that before the box is open saves more money than anything else on this page.
The rough-in is the job
The visible fixture takes an hour. The pipework behind it — supply, drain, trap and vent, properly supported and sloped — is what decides whether the bathroom is quiet and dry in ten years or a slow leak inside a wall. Vents are the part that gets skipped most often, and a drain without a proper vent gurgles, drains slowly and lets smell back into the room. It is invisible work, which is exactly why it gets cut.
While it is open
If a fixture is coming out, the shut-off valve behind it is worth replacing at the same time. Old valves seize, and the one you finally need to close in an emergency is the one that then weeps. Doing it while everything is already apart is the cheapest that job will ever be, and it means the next repair can happen without shutting off the whole house.

Fixtures & Remodels: common questions
Can you install a faucet I bought myself?
Usually, as long as it fits the sink and the supply you have. Send a photo of the sink underneath and of the box, and we will tell you before we come. If something will not fit, we would rather you knew while it is still returnable.
My new shower cartridge still drips. What did I miss?
Often the valve body rather than the cartridge, or a cartridge that is close but not the right one for that valve. Sometimes debris in the seat holds it open. We take it apart, find which of those it is, and tell you whether it is a part or a valve.
Do I need a permit to change a bathroom fixture?
It depends on your city and on what is moving. Swapping a fixture where it stands usually does not. Moving a drain or a vent, or adding a fixture, usually does. We tell you which one you have before any work starts, rather than leaving you to find out at resale.
