Homeowners point at the stain on the ceiling, and that's rarely where the hole is. Water gets in high, then runs down a rafter or along the decking until it finds somewhere to drip. We look for the entry point first, because patching under the stain just moves the damage somewhere you can't see it.
Most leaks are flashing, not shingles
The open field of a roof is usually the part that holds. Failures cluster where the roof meets something else — a chimney, a wall, a vent, a skylight, a valley. That matters when you read a quote, because a flashing repair and a new roof are very different jobs, and a roofer who jumps to replacement without showing you photos of the failure hasn't looked hard enough.
When a repair stops making sense
There's a point where repairs are money spent twice. If the shingles have gone brittle across a whole slope, if granules are washing into the gutters, or if we'd be patching the third spot on the same roof, we say so and put the photos in front of you. It's your call either way — we'd rather you hear the honest version and decide than find out after paying for a patch.

Roof Repair: common questions
How do I know if my roof needs a repair or a full replacement?
It comes down to how old the roof is, how much of it is failing, and whether the failure is in the shingles or in the flashing. One bad valley on an otherwise sound roof is a repair. Shingles that are brittle and shedding across whole slopes usually aren't worth patching, and you get the photos either way.
There's a stain on my ceiling but no water coming in. Is it still worth a look?
Yes. A stain means water got in at some point and has been sitting in the structure, and most leaks get worse through the wet months rather than better. Getting it photographed now also helps later, because damage you can document is easier to deal with than damage you're describing from memory.
Can you tarp the roof while we sort out the repair?
Yes, and a tarp is often the first move when water is actively coming in. It keeps the inside damage from getting worse while the permanent fix is priced and scheduled. It isn't a repair, though, and we won't call it one.
